Speculative design · Futures thinking

SuperSeeds

Don't print it. Plant it.

SuperSeeds are intelligent, genetically designed seeds that regenerate soil, purify air and grow nutrient-rich, biodiverse crops, with no machines or protective gear needed. They're designed for communities seeking food sovereignty, climate resilience and environmental repair, in a world we built for 2060 in coastal Georgia after an ecological collapse.

Timeline

Spring 2025

01 · The challenge

2060 isn't very far away

How can we design for our future in the present?

How can we plan for catastrophic events?

How can we prepare ourselves for what's next?

Worldbuilding is a way of thinking about the future on purpose, through research, conversation and imagination. It makes long-term futures concrete enough to design for.

02 · Researching the future

From today's signals to four possible worlds

PESTLE analysis photo strip

01

PESTLE scan. Six forces shaping the present: fragmentation, an ever-growing economy, siloed living, tech awareness, data protection and a burning planet.

02

VERGE map. How people define, connect, relate, create, consume and destroy in 2025.

03

Futures wheels. Five trends traced to their second- and third-order effects: plural identity, siloed communities, craft revival, ethical alignment and overconsumption.

04

Causal layered analysis. Digging below surface trends to the beliefs and myths that drive them.

05

Critical uncertainties. Two axes, extractive to regenerative and identities defined to explored, produced four scenarios. The group voted on the most plausible world to design for.

The scenario matrix: two critical uncertainties, four futures.

03 · Four futures

What world awaits us?

Living Traditions scenario

Living Traditions

Regenerative × identity defined

Identities rooted in heritage and tradition. The Earth is a sacred gift, and local economies keep resources within each bioregion.

Wild Harmony scenario

Wild Harmony

Regenerative × identity explored

Nomadic, fluid identities and an eco-democracy whose laws adapt to a changing world, with technology and nature working together.

Business as Usual scenario

Business as Usual

Extractive × identity defined

Sustainability is seen as a barrier to growth. Isolated lifestyles, short-term thinking and AI that polices how people think.

Disposable World scenario

Disposable World

Extractive × identity explored

Fast-changing digital identities fuel greenwashed consumerism. Sustainability is visually present but materially hollow.

04 · The world in 2060

After the Tybee Detonation

In 2041, the Tybee Detonation left Chatham County's soil degraded and its air toxic. Communities reorganized as the Eden Commons and live on monotonous printed, drinkable meals, wearing protective gear to go outside.

05 · The product

Seeds that repair the land they grow in

A seed with a glowing circuit pattern held between two fingertips

Carries tardigrade, algae and hardy-plant DNA, so it survives extreme environments

Reads local conditions and grows the crop the soil can support

Starts crop growth and ecosystem repair at the same time

Produces new seeds, so communities can keep growing at no extra cost

Community Seeders, chosen by the Commons, decide which SuperSeeds to plant and where. Scientists decide what goes inside each seed, and guides on call by drone support the work.

The transformation

Today in the CommonsWith SuperSeeds
Printed, monotonous drinkable meals→Food with variety in texture, nutrients and taste
Broken soil→Rich soil that grows food
Toxic air→Clean air
Overused energy→Managed energy use

Apprentices earn badges as they learn, giving young people a role in healing the land their elders damaged. We built the concept with a theory of change, a value proposition canvas and a business model based on biophysical stocks and ecosystem services.

07 · The mission

Glowing green world map with markers for regions in need of repair

“We want to cede power back to the Earth by restoring her ability to grow, nourish, create and heal.”

The mission ends with its own exit: repair the land, air and water until SuperSeeds are no longer needed.

08 · What I learned

Designing for tomorrow, today

Foresight tools like PESTLE, VERGE, futures wheels and causal layered analysis turn vague worry about the future into specific, designable scenarios. Speculative design is a way to test today's decisions against tomorrow's consequences.
